Many people find it difficult to save money, meet their financial goals, and even avoid living paycheck to paycheck. According to CareerBuilder.com, 4 in 10 working Americans say that they often or always live paycheck to paycheck. Being able to create and manage a budget may just be the answer they've been looking for!
First, attitude adjustments are definitely necessary! Budgets are not implemented as a punishment to make you keep your wallet closed and to keep you from enjoying life. Budgets are a tool to help you ensure you are consistently staying on track with your financial goals while tracking your spending habits! The key is to keep a healthy balance between what you make and what you spend.
Keeping up with the Joneses. The truth is money doesn't grow on trees, Cinderella's stepsister's feet did not and never would have fit into her glass slipper, and no one will ever remember if you scored a perfect score on the SAT! Who ARE the Joneses anyways?! Budgeting and finances are personal matters and there is no specific formula to make people millionaires! (Sorry!, no such thing!) Stop comparing yourself to others and focus on what you can do to better your financial future.
Patience is a virtue! OK, do NOT get down on yourself because you do not reach your financial goals in a few months! It just isn't going to happen. Budgeting is a work in progress and takes time. Do not get discouraged. Make smaller, short term goals to keep yourself motivated and on the road to financial freedom. Make sure you reward yourself every now and then for reaching your goals. It might sound silly, but you'll start forming better spending habits and look forward to those financial milestones.
Get Real. Be honest with yourself. If you love to eat out or go out with friends every weekend - do not just cut it out of your life completely because you have the "ever so dreaded budget" now. Cut back on things, start making dinners during the work week and be more frugal with your plans. Go hiking instead of bowling; eat pasta instead of steak; invite friends over for a movie instead of going to the movie theater.
